From my basic understanding: -When the light goes out, the cylinder is warm enough, so with the added heat from compression, you can have combustion. You can start the car -The afterglow maintains the cylinder at a high enough temperature so with the additional heat generated by compression will be hot enough for combustion. Due to heat losses into the block, afterglow is needed to keep the engine running -Once everything is warm enough to sustain combustion, the Afterglow turns off. Coolant Temperature is near some temperature which is high enough to cause them to shut off.
Please someone let me know if I'm wrong, and why. Maybe I need to do some more reading on the subject. Last edited: Nov 4, Afterglow is mainly for warmup emissions, and not to keep the engine running. After about 5 or 6 combustion events in any given cylinder, that cylinder should have enough heat to continue to run without any help. The afterglow merely makes for a better more complete combustion while the engine is warming up, which is largely emissions driven and I think is more aggressive in North American spec cars.
I always listen for the GP relay to click off before I start her up. Lex4TDI4Life said:. The relay is outside the cabin.
Fixmy59bug Veteran Member. What about on the CR Diesels? This is my first diesel but I remember in the 80's my mom would fire up the chevy truck after waiting for the glow plug light to go out. The engine warning light on the dashboard is often the first clue that something is wrong. Vehicles displaying this light should be taken to an authorised workshop for proper diagnosis and service as soon as possible. A number of faults can cause the engine warning light to illuminate — below, we outline the clues which point to faulty glow plugs.
A hard starting engine is the most common indicator of damaged glow plugs. In cold conditions, without correctly functioning glow plugs, the combustion chamber may not reach the right temperature to ignite the fuel and start the engine.
If there are no problems with the fuel or the battery, then glow plugs should be checked. The combustion process in diesel engines requires a high rate of compression, fuel injected at the correct time and in the correct amount.
This ignites the diesel fuel, resulting in combustion. Misfires can be caused by issues with fuel quality, compression and fuel injection. August, Glow Plug Lifetime Glow plugs should last for as long as , miles; they will gradually deteriorate due to wear and tear over this period. Engines with malfunctioning glow plugs show several symptoms such as hard starting, black exhaust smoke, reduced fuel efficiency and a decrease in power and acceleration from engine misfires.
Replacement will assure that they do not affect the other performance enhancing components. Are glow plugs on all the time? Category: automotive auto parts. Usually glow plugs are controlled by a timer with a maximum time of 10 secs, after which it cuts off and the engine can be started, only if the engine is switched off and again on, the heater plugs will glow for 20 secs, and this cycle will go on.
But definitely not during idling. Can a diesel run without glow plugs? Do faulty glow plugs affect performance?
