Should i use teflon tape on gas fittings

One popular question on the subject of Teflon tape alternatives is if silicone sealing tape can be used as a substitute for Teflon tape. Most careful plumbers do not recommend using silicone due to its low resistance to corrosion and poor lubricating characteristics. Teflon tape is so fantastic because it does just the opposite! If you use too much Teflon tape, this can crack the female adapter, leading to a leaky fitting.

Our tip is to always inspect your work to ensure that you have tightly covered the entire length of the threads evenly and consistently. Typically, 2 — 4 wraps of thread seal tape are sufficient but, you also want to make sure you are giving your wraps a nice, tight tug.

After hand-tightening, you can use channel locks or something similar to tighten further. Hills Irrigation recommends consulting a professional for all electrical and plumbing work. Vince is Managing Director of Hills Irrigation and is supported by Lisa in an administrative capacity.

Andrew, Isaac and Megan look after the day to day needs of both online and shop customers. As Project Manager, Vince is also responsible for installation projects along with his team. It is his responsibility to work closely with clients to ensure that scope of work is understood and followed. I would redo it. Aren't you going to feel silly if you have a problem because you didn't want to do 20 minutes work?

The teflon allows the threads to slip tighter, and the Rectorseal does the acutal sealing. Reply to Stormin Mormon. I would replace it with either the gas-rated tape, or the old-fashoined gooey pipe sealer. The typical white teflon tape is not to code, or so I have been told by a plumber I happened to ask at the hardware store, who was most emphatic.

All continues to work well and I verified that the gas connections are leak free. I did some searching on the internet and could not find any evidence of more than usual premature failures of gas water heaters [gas delivery related] because of using white Teflon tape on the gas pipe connection.

My guess is that there probably is some sort of inlet screen on the thermostat to stop large particles from getting into it. Also I feel that disassembling it at this point could do more harm than good due to all the Teflon tape that would come loose in the threads during the removal process.

Thanks again and next time for sure I will use the yellow stuff. Which is better plumbers putty or Teflon tape? Teflon tape gives a reliable seal on threaded pipe joints for liquids and gases that may be under considerable pressure.

Plumber's putty acts as a flexible caulk in situations where you need water resistance—but it cannot withstand any significant pressure.

Do you use Teflon tape on PVC threads? Plastic fittings do not need this lubrication. When Teflon tape is wrapped around plastic male threads it adds to the strain and tensile stress. Teflon paste and pipe dope, just like Teflon tape, make threaded joints slippery. Their use on PVC fittings can be an invitation to over-torque. What is the best thread sealant for PVC?

When assembling threaded PVC fittings, a sealing compound that is non-hardening is the best. How long does gas pipe sealant take to dry? Under normal pressures the pipe joint compounds does not need a curing time. If the pressure in the lines is psi or higher, the recommended cure time is 4 hours before initiating pressure.

The Fuel Gas is silent on whether it is even required, the Plumbing code requires it. So, no I don't think you can require it. One could argue that if sealant is used, it must be listed for the use.

Thread joint compounds shall be resistant to the action of liquefied petroleum gas or to any other chemical constituents of the gases to be conducted through the piping. The type of piping joint used shall be suitable for the pressure-temperature conditions and shall be selected giving consideration to joint tightness and mechanical strength under the service conditions.

The joint shall be able to sustain the maximum end force caused by the internal pressure and any additional forces caused by temperature expansion or contraction, vibration, fatigue or the weight of the pipe and its contents. Pipe joints shall be threaded, flanged, brazed or welded. Brazing alloys shall not contain more than 0.
