Lewis carroll who is he

A master logician, Dodgson's work in the fields of linear algebra, geometry, and puzzle-making is noteworthy. His interests and expertise widely varied; he also wrote the first printed proof of the Kronecker-Capelli theorem [ PDF ] and a conceptual system for better governmental representation.

As with several elements of his life, Dodgson was a conservative mathematician, living and working in an age in which the discipline was dramatically changing. The list of people suspected of being Jack the Ripper is a long one, and, for some reason, the mind behind Alice is on it. The Ripper and Dodgson were contemporaries; the murders took place in , when Dodgson was in his mids. Author Richard Wallace theorized that Dodgson, following a strict religious upbringing and potential bullying during his unhappy school years, grew up to become a serial murderer following his successful teaching and writing careers.

Alice Liddell remembers spending many hours with Carroll, sitting on his couch while he told fantastic tales of dream worlds. During an afternoon picnic with Alice and her two sisters, Carroll told the first iteration of what would later become Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

When Alice arrived home, she exclaimed that he must write the story down for her. He fulfilled the small girl's request, and through a series of coincidences, the story fell into the hands of the novelist Henry Kingsley, who urged Carroll to publish it. The book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was released in By the time of his death, Alice had become the most popular children's book in England, and by , it was one of the most popular in the world.

Besides writing, Carroll created a number of fine photographs. His notable portraits include those of the actress Ellen Terry and the poet Alfred Tennyson. He also photographed children in every possible costume and situation, eventually making nude studies of them.

Despite conjecture, little real evidence of child abuse can be brought against him. Shortly before his 66th birthday, Carroll caught a severe case of influenza, which led to pneumonia. He died on January 14, , leaving an enigma behind him. The next year, a writer named A. Whatever his intent, unambiguously serious writers picked up the thread. Similar analyses would appear as the literature on the Alice author grew.

In , Florence Becker Lennon advanced the case that Dodgson had had an unhealthy attraction to Alice with Victoria Through the Looking Glass , the first modern critical biography of him. He loved little girls, but, like Peter Pan, he had no intention of marrying them. Alice was 11 then—too young, even by Victorian mores.

Alice did not talk to Lennon because, her sister said, she was ill. The idea that Dodgson had an unhealthy involvement with Alice has persisted, although there is no evidence to support it. Three major biographies published in the s, by Donald Thomas, Michael Bakewell and Morton Cohen, suggested that he had pedophilic urges but never acted on them.

But even they are an imperfect source. Four of the 13 volumes are missing—as are the pages covering late June , when his break with the Liddells occurred.

A Dodgson descendant apparently cut them out after the writer died. Liddell that he is supposed to be using the children as a means of paying court to the governess—he is also supposed Grundy, and come down to spend the day with me at Oxford?

She concluded that he was attracted to adult women including Mrs.
