I'm definitely looking at a stretched out iphone app. Even the hangouts UI is set up better than this. The Chat Webapp really is what we need here. Though even that isn't perfect. Kinda big oof there. And lets be honest thats about x faster. TBH this is an improvement over Hangouts, but lets not forget how antiquated Hangouts was. This works, and it's better, but there's a lot more to do. Google Chat added the ability to have rooms where specific topic threads can be created.

The alphabetical sorting of conversations means hunting down the person you were just talking to. The conversations are spaced relatively far apart and take up way too much screen real estate. The color scheme is blindingly bright. Et cetera. Not only that, all wording is formatted in rows, not in text bubbles. The new app is now a part of the Gmail ecosystem which includes Gmail, Meet and Rooms, among other features. Until now, Google allowed only its Google Workspace users to take advantage of the Chat app.

However, the tech giant has now rolled out the app for all personal users of Gmail, including iOS and Android smartphone users. For Android, Google is yet to launch the Chat platform within the Gmail app.
